Honestly, I still get stressed sometimes.
Yes, I’m a Business Coach and Intuitive Healer who works with business owners and professionals across a range of areas, but especially around getting out of the cycle of stress or avoiding/escaping burnout.
I’m also human.
Perhaps one of the main reasons I’ve ended up specialising in stress is because I was once the ultimate stress junkie. Back in my 20’s and 30’s – not the entire time but certainly in patches – I was working long hours, working to tight deadlines and getting to holidays or long weekends too exhausted to enjoy them. For five years I worked and lived in Europe. Work had me travelling between countries – sometimes two or three cities in the space of a week – and running full day management trainings on the go. That was particularly crazy.
But even when I moved out of the corporate space (and pace!) into my private coaching practice – and work I really loved – I was still stressed.
It had become habitual.
And I soon learned that when you really love what you do, it can drive stress too.
I’m nowhere near that place now and my approach to work and life has changed dramatically in the last ten years, but it doesn’t mean I don’t still get stressed sometimes.
The joke is, if you have a nervous system, you’re going to get stressed occasionally.
The difference now is that I know what to do about it.
Aaannnd … I have zero tolerance for staying in it.
I’ve learned A LOT about how NOT to be a stress junkie.
Here’s the thing …
I’m still excellent at being overwhelmed at times.
Sometimes I look at everything I have to do and don’t know where to start.
I have a sensitive nervous system because of past chronic stress and trauma.
Until last month, I would still get a hit to my nervous system every time a lockdown was announced and the national warning message came up on my phone.
BUT …
I get stressed waaayyyyyy less than ever before.
I know how to settle my nervous system down in minutes if it gets activated over something.
There are far fewer things that can trigger my stress response now.
I spend most of my work days in calm, clarity and enjoyment. Most of the time I love what I’m up to, especially when I’m working with clients. I feel good.
I did not get here overnight. But it is a totally walkable path.
Transform stress …
My approach to stress is not typical. For one thing, I don’t believe in ‘stress management’ which presupposes you’re going to have stress and you somehow have to manage it.
I have found you can transform stress instead.
I believe in learning to run your body in such a way that you can turn stress right down, and even transform it into positive energy.
I believe we can all learn to take control over our internal responses, even when we can’t control something happening outside of us. I know we can because after much searching, I learned how to do this for myself, and it’s now what I teach others to do every day.
