If you’ve not been feeling quite yourself lately, feeling low, stuck in a lot of stress, or have lost your motivation or mojo, welcome to humanity. You’re not alone. And it could be Covid stress or some form of the ‘Covid blues’.
We’re in a pandemic. Life has changed. And it’s affecting people in many different ways. Numerous people I’ve spoken to in recent months know they’re not feeling themselves but can’t quite put their finger on what’s actually going on, or how to unravel it for themselves and begin to make changes. They’re business owners, professionals, stay at home parents, working parents. Anyone can be feeling the effects of this challenging time.
You might be feeling low, fed up, a bit lost, overwhelmed or like you’re running on empty. Maybe you’re procrastinating, vacillating on things or being chronically indecisive. Maybe you’re feeling alone.
And everyone wants to make sense of things.
Are my stress levels too high or is this normal?
Why am I procrastinating?
Why do I feel so lost?
What can I do about my anxiety?
Why do I feel so low?
What can I do if I’m stuck?
How can I help my friends/family or staff?
To help make sense of it all I’ve catalogued some of the common emotional responses and challenges I’ve noticed in people over the last twelve months or so. It began as a blog post, blossomed into a 5,000 word article and has evolved further into a practical and insightful eBook – Beating Covid Stress: Understanding Covid Stress and Finding Ways to Thrive.
‘Covid stress’ and Covid-19 related depression and anxiety, etc are being documented in many countries, but rather than focusing on statistics I want to focus on how you can take charge of your own internal experience and feel more resilient now. Understanding what is actually going on with us can be a real turning point in being able to move forward in fresh ways. And we can take tiny steps to start feeling more like ourselves again.
I believe we can thrive even through adversity or challenge, and continue becoming our best selves.
You might be looking around at the moment and thinking that everyone else seems to be coping with work and life even though you’re feeling brain-fried, exhausted or too stressed for your own good. For some people, the challenges of the last twelve months are just starting to hit them. Or the effects have been showing up for a while and been conveniently ignored. Who’s got time to be too tired or brain foggy?
Don’t be fooled – you’re not the only one paddling your feet madly beneath the water while you look calm on top. Stress has a tendency to creep up subtly over time and a lot of people are starting to notice more obviously the knock-on effects now from their tough 2020. As I talk about in the book, making yourself wrong about how you’re feeling usually leads to more bad feeling and keeps you stuck. The sooner you accept how you are, the sooner you will be able to move beyond it.

While we’re having a vast range of experiences around the world, in one sense, we’re also all in the same boat. I really believe we’re being called to look after ourselves and take responsibility for our wellbeing, to have faith, to grow, and to have compassion for ourselves and others.
I hope this small book helps you do all of these things at least in some small way.
