Every year I spend time on the first of January defining my goals and what’s important to me about the year ahead and mapping out plans, as you do. I really enjoy it and it generally comes quite effortlessly. But not this year. This year had a different flow altogether. I was travelling up north to the beach that day and it was a time of action and people rather than sitting and pondering. And, honestly, I simply had no idea on the first of January what I wanted my goals to be.
This is not the greatest of feelings when you’re a coach who earns their living helping other people do this every day. And I did have a moment where I wondered if there was something seriously wrong! But, I knew underneath all the mind chatter about it that there was something bigger going on and that it would all become clear when it was supposed to.
Of course the New Year is an amazing chance to reset, to start fresh and make new beginnings. It naturally has us thinking about the twelve months ahead of us and what kind of year we want to have. And this year has an even stronger vibe about it in that regard, perhaps because we’re not only entering a new year but also a new decade, and what many in the worlds of astrology and numerology would say is a whole new level of energy and possibility as we enter the Aquarian Age.
We’re not only entering a new year but also a new decade, and a whole new level of energy and possibility.
For many people last year was tough or challenging or calling on them to deal with a lot of their ‘stuff’ (I was in the latter camp), and fortunately (!) this year is more about reaping what you’ve sown, enjoying your path and being grateful. 2020 is the year of the White Metal Rat in Chinese astrology imbuing the year with a sense of renewal and abundance – a time for new beginnings and to enjoy what you have. [Side note: I was reading my Chinese horoscope the other day for the first time out of curiosity (I’m a rabbit) and it said my Best Jobs were: breeder, teacher, priest, police and judge. What does one do with this information?!]
Anyway, I knew this as the New Year was approaching so I was looking forward to feeling that new energy coming in, and to moving forward after working through an enormous amount of emotional and spiritual healing last year. So when I had a whole bunch more emotional baggage come up a couple of days after Christmas, I was pretty unimpressed… I thought I was going to be chilling out and having some nice holiday time. I soon realised I just needed to go with it, and spent the following few weeks, in-between visiting with friends and camping at the beach etc, working through everything that was coming up for me; sitting with it, healing and releasing, and giving thanks. It didn’t make some of my holiday time very fun, but it did make it very productive!
I read a couple of books over that time, watched a couple of webinars – all completely unrelated to each other, but all offering perfect insights for me as I read or watched. And then quite suddenly in the last week of Jan – in the space of 24 hours – it all clicked into clarity. Suddenly I could see what I wanted to make happen with work and home and holidays, among other things for 2020. After dinner that night I sat down at my laptop and started typing, and out came what matters to me about this year.
The next day I’d hired a housekeeper to clean for me and put out feelers for a new marketing assistant. It was all in motion in moments – something that happens once we’re truly aligned with what we want.
Something that happens once we’re truly aligned with what we want.
I’m always saying that the New Year is not always a good time to set goals or start new habits, because anytime is good for that – and because we tend to give ourselves too much at once to try to achieve. But what I was really reminded of this year is that our own growth patterns, spiritual journey and personal development have their own rhythm and seasons, and we have to honour that above all. No matter what the stars are telling us. Or what date it is. Or what everyone else is doing. You are where you are in the history of your own universe.
You are evolving at your own pace. You will face your own patterns when it’s time to face them. You will enjoy the renewal and upliftment (I think I just made that up) of overcoming your own stuckness or confusion or emotional healing. And it will be great.
Don’t let anybody tell you when you should know what you want – you’ll know when you know.
And don’t let anyone tell you when to start. Your whole being will know when it’s ready to begin.
And don’t let anyone tell you it’s not enough. Only you can know if you are truly showing up for yourself and what pace you need to go at.
Go at that pace.
You are where you are in the history of your own universe.
We are seriously powerful human beings – you are a seriously powerful human being – with the capacity to manifest, learn and create A N Y T H I N G.
I hope in 2020 you find yourself manifesting, learning and creating E V E R Y T H I N G that matters to you.
Much love,
Karen x
